Van's Triple Crown Of Surfing Various Artists
CD/DVD Review by Mike D'Ariano

I'm from New York and our beaches are half industrial sludge, and half medical waste. You go in the water and you come out with weird red blotches all over you and garbage stuck to your ass. That said, I don't know shit about surfing. With that in mind, I didn't think I'd be terribly into this DVD, but in the spirit of "I don't know shit about feudal Japan, but I still love Kurosawa films," I decided to check it out.

I was right. I didn't find the surfing terribly interesting. However, if you're into it, there's a lot of footage of guys riding (if that's the wrong terminology, sue me) as well as talking about surfing and the history of the Triple Crown event. It seems like a great documentary, if the subject matter gets you going.

The bonus CD I found much more enjoyable. It features eight of the songs heard on the DVD, which features several dozen tunes from all the Epitaph/Hellcat records bands. Included on the CD are recent tunes from Dropkick Murphys, Pennywise, Millencolin and Motion City Soundtrack among others. It's like Punk-O-Rama Ten and a Half.

All in all, even though the CD is good, I'd say if surfing isn't your thing, you may want to avoid this one - but I bet you already knew that.

Hang ten dude, or something like that.
